Mercedita: Drowned Man

drowned man

My most favorite character to ink is this drowned man. What horror and dread have befallen upon this poor soul? Though I wont be able to show you this man’s hell, the culprit is going to take a center stage.Dan-dan-dan–DAAAN! I’m feeling very excited as I ink the final pages of my comic Mercedita. Please be ready for Supanova! *fingerscrossed*

New year new comic!

After struggling with the script for the myth of Mercedita, and after a number of revisions of thumbnails, I finally summed up courage to draft the comic pages. Here’s my Mercedita comic in it’s full rawness and loose form. First day of 2014 will be inking these babies! YAY Start the year right with comics.

Also here’s an image of the unfinished script that helped me arrange my thoughts and ideas about the story.

Niña

Niña is the main character in a one shot comics that I have been slowly conceptualising which is called “Mercedita”. Yesterday I finished my thumbnails for the 10 page comics which turned out to be a bit more tricky than I expected. Here is the art style that I’m  planning to use for my comic. What do you think? It’s a mix of style from Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond and Taga-ilog’s Pasig as well as Tabi-po by Melvin Malonso.  I’m so hyped to finish this before the holiday ends!

So we have this graphic novel anthology project in the Curtin Illustration Club and I struggled for a long time about what myth I would choose. My  first idea is a myth about a room in the Architecture building(in Curtin) which is rumored to be haunted. And then there’re heaps more from my hometown in Philippines. I couldnt bring myself to choose among these…in the end I went with the myth that I am most intimate with, about witches.

The myth is about the name of our small barangay, Pila-pila. Heresay is, there were a number of witches (mangkukulam) in our baranggay that were burned. Withces fall in long lines for their turn. “fall in line” is a loose translation of the word pila-pila. Grewing up, I hear neighbors pointing out some specific houses in the middle of the field saying, ” That’s the witches house!” And there were also dwende(elves) in coconut trees and we were to say “Tabi Po”(Pardon us/Excuse us) to pay respect to them. And there is also Mercedita, that haunts an abandoned stone house in our town. Mercedita plays pranks and fool people in boats and is said to take away the souls of young men into her world.  (reference)

For my comic I will be exploring Mercedita in a short coming of age story of a young witch. Here are some conceptualisation. The main character’s name is Niña, a girl’s name derived from Santo Niño or a Child Christ and also the name of my cute niece. (wiki article)
